What this calculator shows

PPF is a long-term, government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year term. You deposit money each financial year, interest is credited once a year, and that interest earns interest in later years. The calculator shows the total you would deposit, the estimated interest, and the balance at the end of each year.

The formula, in plain words

Each year's deposit is added at the start of the year, and the whole balance then grows by the annual rate: balance at year end = (balance at start + deposit) × (1 + rate). Repeated for 15 years, that equals deposit × [((1 + rate)^15 − 1) ÷ rate] × (1 + rate).

A worked example

If you deposit ₹1,50,000 at the start of every financial year for 15 years and the rate stayed at, say, 7.1% throughout, you would deposit ₹22.5 lakh and the balance would be about ₹40.7 lakh. That rate is used here only to illustrate the arithmetic — enter the rate in force when you use the calculator.

Assumptions and limits

  • One rate for all 15 years. In reality the rate is reset quarterly and the final value will differ.
  • Deposits must stay within the yearly minimum and maximum set by the scheme rules; check the current limits before planning.
  • Tax treatment is not modelled here; confirm it with the official rules or a tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the interest rate filled in?

The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter, and we would rather you enter the current official rate than rely on a number that may be out of date. Your bank, the post office, or the Ministry of Finance's notification lists it.

Does the date of my deposit matter?

Yes. PPF interest for a month is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of that month, so a deposit made after the 5th misses that month's interest. This calculator assumes each year's deposit is in by the start of the financial year.

What happens after 15 years?

The scheme allows the account to be continued in blocks of five years, with or without further deposits. This calculator stops at the original 15-year term.
