Step-up SIP Calculator
A step-up (or top-up) SIP raises the monthly amount once a year, usually in line with salary increases. See how much difference that annual increase makes.

What this calculator shows
A regular SIP keeps the same instalment for years, even as income rises. A step-up SIP increases the instalment by a percentage you choose every year. The calculator shows the total you would invest, the estimated value, the monthly amount you would be paying in the final year, and — for comparison — what the same starting SIP would reach if it never increased.
The formula, in plain words
There is no single short formula, so the calculator works month by month. In month m, the instalment is the starting amount × (1 + step-up)^(number of full years completed). Each instalment is added at the start of the month and the whole balance grows by the monthly rate, which is the annual return ÷ 12.
A worked example
Start with ₹10,000 a month at an assumed 12% return for 10 years. Without a step-up, the estimate is about ₹23.2 lakh. With a 10% annual step-up, you invest about ₹19.1 lakh in total instead of ₹12 lakh, your monthly SIP reaches roughly ₹23,600 in year 10, and the estimate rises to about ₹33.7 lakh. Much of the extra comes from the higher amounts you invested — but the earlier increases also had years to compound.
Assumptions and limits
- A steady return every year, which real markets do not deliver; returns are not guaranteed.
- The step-up assumes your income can keep up. A plan you cannot sustain is worse than a smaller one you can.
- No taxes, costs, or inflation are deducted.
Frequently asked questions
When does the increase happen?
In this calculator the amount rises once every 12 months: months 1–12 use the starting amount, months 13–24 use the amount increased once, and so on.
Why does a small step-up make such a big difference?
Each increase is permanent and stacks on earlier ones, and the extra money also compounds. Over 15–20 years both effects add up.
Do mutual funds offer a step-up option?
Many fund houses and platforms let you register a top-up SIP. The exact options differ, so check with your fund house or platform.
